IHES is an international research institute in mathematics and theoretical physics located just outside Paris, in Bures-sur-Yvette.
Founded in 1958 its activities revolve around a small group of high-profile permanent professors.
Scientific activities at IHES
Invited Researcher Program
Each year, around 200 researchers from around the world spend an average of two months at IHES. During their time at the Institute, scientists benefit from unique working conditions: they are freed from administrative and teaching duties and have the opportunity to engage in curiosity-driven research with some of the greatest experts in their field. IHES generally provides visitors with a stipend, access to the Institute’s cafeteria, and housing. A Childcare Center also provides a childcare solution for visiting scientists and their families.
Postdoctoral programs
Early-career researchers may apply to one of the Institute’s several postdoctoral research programs and spend between two and three years at the Institute. Applications are due by December. Successful candidates join IHES in the fall of the following year.
Conferences, lecture series, and summer schools
Each year, IHES hosts a variety of conferences in mathematics and theoretical physics. The Institute also hosts the Cours de l’IHES lecture series, during which renowned experts present new and important results in their fields. In the summer, the Institute holds a summer school primarily aimed at early-career researchers.
IHES Profile
- Located in Bures-sur-Yvette, in the south of Paris, France
- International research center in mathematics and theoretical physics, revolving around a small group of high-profile permanent professors, who are among the greatest experts in their fields
- Hosts the Alexander Grothendieck Laboratory (UMR – Unité mixte de recherche du CNRS)
